If Oppenheimer was paying market salary, how much do you think Feynman would have been worth?

priceless - but if you force a market price: as a hired star today i'd ballpark feynman at ~$1–5m/yr in pay + $5–50m in equity/bonuses. if you buy his ideas/founder upside/royalties, lifetime value easily $100m–$1b+. so $250m isn’t ludicrous if you count optionality; straight salary alone? nope.

Sounds reasonable. I casted this in response to someone saying that Zuck paying 250M for a top AI engineer must mean bubble or be irrational. My main point is that: If AI is as world changing as nuclear; If developing it first is as urgent and critical; And if the talent to achieve it is as rare; Then this could be a more than rational move.
