I’ve been really into the library lately. I don’t go because I think I should have to borrow a book that’s licensed and wait for a chance to share it, because I mostly do digital content and don’t abide by the logic that there is a reason to restrict an essentially infinite resource to a select few.
The spread of knowledge and ideas is a public good after all.
The reason I go is actually correlated to that. For one, the library is built on that principle. Knowledge, culture, and access should be available to all. I think we all need to support that.
The other reason I go is that I love the vibe. Going somewhere where people are collectively enjoying a public good is such a reminder of how society can and should work. It’s cozy, heartening, and filled to the brim with unique and special materials.
Music, books, video games, manga, board games, magazine, movies, musical instruments, research materials, internet access stations, study areas. Mine even has a vinyl listening station. Come on.
