After decades of speculation, the elusive fungus responsible for producing the ergot alkaloids in morning glories has finally been identified. Periglandula clandestina, a new species discovered by WVU student Corinne Hazel and professor Daniel Panaccione. This hidden gem lives in symbiosis with morning glory plants, confirming a long standing hypothesis by non other than LSD’s inventor, Albert Hofmann! Why is this huge? The fungus produces compounds similar to LSD, which are being explored for their potential in treating mental health conditions like depression, PTSD, and addiction.
