I’ll admit it: for the past year, I’ve had my head in the sand when it comes to U.S. politics—which is wildly out of character for someone who spent a decade in public policy. But it was intentional. The current political strategy thrives on flooding people with chaos—constant fear, confusion, and outrage designed to exhaust you. Toward the end of 2024, I decided to opt out. I shut the signal overload down to protect my mental and physical health (and yes, for a guy in his 30s who still looks suspiciously young, that mattered). Most of what I have followed came from trying to add context to whatever alarming TikTok clip my partner heard that week—or from the Wall Street Journal, courtesy of a subscription the previous tenant forgot to cancel.
