How I Got My Driver's License: A Journey of Fear, Failure, and Finally Passing I was afraid to start driving school and get my driver's license. Stories about corruption scared me, and to top it off, I had just dyed my hair blonde—I could already imagine the stereotypical comments from instructors and inspectors. But I really, really wanted to drive. What I didn't expect was that my journey to getting a driver's license would take eight months.
Act One – Theory I completed my theory lessons, practiced test-taking with "PDR Tests Pro," and booked my exam slot. To be honest, I barely remember that first exam—I was so terrified that I rushed through all the questions in just 3–4 minutes. Then I got stuck on the last question, the one I didn’t know the answer to. My entire result depended on it. I failed. Ten days later, I went for my second attempt. I was nervous, but I had already scheduled my driving lessons, so passing the theory was a must. And I did. 🔹 Lesson learned: A clear goal always helps you push through.
Act Two – Practice For the first time, I sat behind the wheel of a diesel car. The instructor explained what to do, and—miraculously—I drove! Hour after hour, I gained confidence. ✔️ Left turns? Not so scary anymore. ✔️ Trams? No longer intimidating. ✔️ Honking drivers? I could ignore them. I passed my driving school exam quickly and started looking for a new instructor with a gasoline car to prepare for the final test at the Service Center. That’s when things got interesting—turns out, gasoline is not diesel, and I kept stalling. Ten more lessons later, I felt ready for the exam. (Or so I thought.)
Act Three – The Exam (or How Not to Hate the Inspector Who Makes You Park Six Times) I’d love to describe all the pain and suffering, but I refuse to make this a depressing post. (Not today.) Exam 1: Service Center car. I started stalling again. Made it through half the route, collected seven mistakes—failed. 🔹 Lesson learned: Inspectors are human too. They’re not actually trying to fail you. Exam 2: Everything was going perfectly—I wasn’t stalling, the sun was shining. Then I ran a red light. ⚠️ Inspector intervened. Failed. 🔹 Lesson learned: Third gear = longer braking distance. I saw the red light but couldn’t stop in time. Now I know I’ll never make this mistake on the road.
