The worst match of Yamal’s career. It looked like he wasn’t even trying — every second pass went backwards, and he’s never been this passive. But Nuno Mendes completely shut him down.
Try getting past Mendes — fast, coordinated, always meeting you at an angle, slightly crouched. And on top of that, he’s smart, reads opponents well. His defensive “scalp list” this season includes: Sané, Foden, Saka, Thuram, Salah, Yamal.
He’s not as flashy in attack as Hakimi, but that’s because of his calculated, more cautious role. Mendes doesn’t just charge up and down the pitch — he joins the attack only when it truly matters. Remarkably composed and intelligent for a 22-year-old.
Undisputed best left-back this season — and honestly, should be in the top 10 players of the year. 1 reply
