I read about this when I used to own bearded dragons! I believe the parietal eye is mainly for detecting overhead predators. Reptiles are cold-blooded so they need to bask on hot surfaces to digest food properly. But this exposes them to overhead predators on sunny days. The parietal eye senses this danger.
