“In a republic, who is ‘the country?’ Is it the government which is for the moment in the saddle? Why, the government is merely a temporary servant; it cannot be its prerogative to determine what is right and what is wrong, and decide who is a patriot and who isn’t. Its function is to obey orders, not originate them. Who, then, is ‘the country?’ Is it the newspaper? Is it the pulpit? Why, these are mere parts of the country, not the whole of it; they have not command, they have only their little share in the command. In a monarchy, the king and his family are the country; in a republic, it is the common voice of the people. Each of you, for himself, by himself and on his own responsibility, must speak. It is a solem and weighty responsibility, and not lightly to be flung aside at the bullying of pulpit, press, government, or the empty catchphrases of politicians. Each must for himself alone decide what is right and what is wrong, and which course is patriotic and which isn’t. You cannot shirk this and be a man. To decide it against your convictions is to be an unqualified and inexcusable traitor, both to yourself and to your country, let men label you as they may. If you alone of all the nation shall decide one way, and that way be the right way according to your convictions of the right, you have done your duty by yourself and by your country. Hold up your head. You have nothing to be ashamed of.”

I put my wallet on top of my car while I was getting gas and then proceeded to drive for 20 minutes with my wallet STILL ON TOP OF MY CAR. It was STILL THERE when I realized and parked…it’s a Sunday miracle!! 😅😅😅

I heard the same thing! It definitely was a crazy time to be alive! I still remember the “duck and cover” drills that we did every week in elementary school. Each student would get under their desk and place their hands over their heads, as if doing so would somehow protect them from total nuclear annihilation! 🤣

As your father, I couldn’t be prouder of you for speaking so eloquently about the troubling future that awaits your generation. I’m sure that many, many others feel the same way. While I am from a previous generation, I share your concerns, and I believe that many people from my generation, as well as all previous generations who are alive to see it, feel the same.

Last night while I couldn't sleep, I wrote this essay about what the future holds for my generation. Please consider giving it a read and sharing your thoughts, even if you disagree. I'm always open to the idea that I may be wrong. https://medium.com/@crsr404/what-future-awaits-the-youngest-generation-f91e85b74518

RIP Brian Wilson. Impossible for me to reflect back on my childhood without hearing the Beach Boys soundtrack play alongside the memories, largely influenced by my dad (whom I love dearly). From learning to belt the words of "Wouldn't It Be Nice" long before I understood what they meant to baa-baa-baaing on road trips to "Barbara Ann," many of my life's simplest, happiest moments are intertwined with Brian's music. As a summer kid on the lake in Michigan or around the community pool, the staples were "Surfin' USA" and "I Get Around." Then, as a tween who yearned for visits to the West Coast but proud of her East Coast roots, "California Girls" became the favorite. I am nearly positive my dad sent me a YouTube link to it once I finally made the decision to move to California as an adult. And if I have a wedding one day with a father-daughter dance, it would be to one song and one song only: "God Only Knows" because, yes, God only knows what I'd be without the man who introduced me to the Beach Boys.
