Alongside everything I’ve been talking about, I was still working as a photographer. Work went up and down — sometimes better, sometimes worse. For example, spring is almost a dead season for tourism. For some reason, tourists from our region are convinced it’s the rainy season. But there’s no real “rainy season” in the Dominican Republic — what there is, though, is a hurricane season, hahaha. And that’s not in spring, it’s in autumn. Most of my work was photographing newlyweds — a unique type of people, really. They usually fall into one of two extremes: either everything is perfect, they’re happy and enjoying everything, or everything is a disaster, they’re constantly fighting and driving everyone — including the photographer — crazy. Thankfully, full weddings with guests were rare for us. When they did happen, they were usually organized by Europeans or Americans, and those weddings were almost always beautiful, well-organized, and often a lot of fun. As for clients from the post-Soviet region — more often than not, they either get drunk and cause drama, or just sit there bored and don’t enjoy themselves, even after flying all the way to the Dominican Republic. I’ve worked at weddings for people from many different countries, so I have a good basis for comparison. Honestly — and this may sound strange — I don’t really like weddings in general, hahaha. The whole thing just feels like pointless showmanship — an expensive, meaningless event! If you’ve ever looked into the history of wedding ceremonies, you’ll know what I mean. That said, sometimes it really is a joyful and pleasant celebration — but that always depends on the people. And that “sometimes” didn’t happen as often as I’d have liked. As for me — I just happened to stumble into the world of wedding photography. It was never something I intentionally aimed for.
