Farcaster is wrong about gambling and casinos. We treat the aversion to casinos like the aversion to nudity: a cultural virtue that people can acclimate to... but really it's more like the aversion to cigarettes. Some people aren't bothered by cigarettes, and thoroughly enjoy them while being fully aware of the risks. Other people can't handle the stench of cigarettes or actively battle life-long cravings. There is a substantial subset of people who will never "come around to it"--not because they disagree ideologically but simply because they don't want to be around cigarette smoke all day. I don't know if it's a majority, but it could be by association. I bet we'll regret the collateral damage from making cigarettes front-and-center.

Strongly agree But there’s also the issue that no matter what you build in this space, some external observers will label it a cigarette, purely by association You could be selling a banana — but it’s in the smoke shop, so these customers aren’t coming in no matter what So what are you gonna do? Keep trying to sell bananas to smokers or lean in and sell vapes (convincing yourself that at least it’s not cigarettes)?

the way you’re bringing this issue up feels earnest to me and perhaps you even have some experience with folks who have gone through gambling addiction or similar. it’s a very valid point and the long term implications are worth considering as you say. I think there’s another kind of person on here who uses “gambling” to describe anything from buying large cap altcoins to playing literal casino miniapps. and they really want you to know that what *they’re* building is way above that (even though nobody uses it) and that they’re extremely principled etc. I really appreciate the former, not so much the latter lol.

It is a matter of time before we see where all this is going. I don't understand why they are focusing so much on crypto. The Base app is just a competitor that shares the same goal; actually, they were first a wallet and have now expanded into social. Farcaster is doing the opposite journey. Perhaps, and I have mentioned this before, Base will buy Farcaster, and that will be it. In the meantime, I think they have lost an excellent opportunity to create something different for social networking. Bluesky has become an alternative to X. In my case, I cast less because most of the content here is about cash out. It is not my cup of tea, so I might stop casting at some point because I don't find content that aligns with my interests.

That's why I keep on about wanting them to do more to support the arts and art culture. Crypto has a lot of non gambling use cases and one of the best is as a global art marketplace for all of humanity. It's a niche right now, not where the money is, but it's got crypto usefulness potential so it's valuable.
