Lake Retba is located northeast of the African country of Senegal, to the north of the Cape Verde Peninsula. It is 35 kilometers from Dakar. Its area is 3 square kilometers. The pink color comes from the hue of its water, which becomes intensely pink during the dry season. This is due to the presence of algae called Donaliella salina, which produces a red pigment that absorbs sunlight. The high salt content allows people to float easily on its waters, similar to the Dead Sea.
