Yes, it’s a separate later contract that put the image on chain. The actual punk tokens we all own do not reference an onchain image.

punks: - brought generative art to blockchain - created the first marketplace for unique digital objects - inspired the on-chain generative art movement - collection images and attribute lists are now "on-chain" i'll take the broader view here :)

I’m not arguing the value of punks, their influence or contribution - I think I’ve written enough to show I’m a true believer. I’m just saying that saying punks are onchain is incorrect. The contract has an image hash, which is fascinating and unique in its own right.
