I'll keep posting this meme on a weekly basis, until Ethereum people start admitting that the #1 issue of [D]apps today isn't lack of scalable block space but something that's apparently so much intellectually beneath everyone here that nobody is even talking about it

indexers as a whole? or *scan specifically?

Until there's any actually decentralized indexing solution I'd say the entire indexing space is unaligned with Ethereum.

TheGraph is kind of decentralized I think

the gateway is centralized, but indexers themselves aren't, afaik

Which matters zero if everything goes through their gateway anyway. Also last time I checked (admittedly a while ago) they didn't have Fishermen implemented, aka the thing that keeps the decentralized part honest.

I guess the gateway could be decentralized via libp2p but then performance would suck or just let anyone deploy their own

Not really, the gateway is routing requests across a dynamic set of indexers that respond to the specific query. But it would be cool to see some decentralized compute platform take on exactly such challenges (and not introduce additional gateways or other forms of centralized services)

using a direct libp2p network doesn't imply gateways tho you could write a custom libp2p protocol that would wrap GraphQL

Oh sorry, of course you're right, I was somehow thinking you mean via IPFS! But indeed, building a decentralized index discovery, data exchange and resilience layer on top of libp2p would be fantastic, pls send anyone building that my way, happy to support them - including through Gnosis VC!
