The Mischievous Dog: A guy adopts a dog from a shelter, and the staff warn him, "This one’s a bit of a prankster." Sure enough, the dog starts hiding socks, stealing sandwiches off the counter, and even barking at the neighbor’s cat just to start drama. One day, the guy comes home to find his living room covered in shredded paper, with the dog sitting proudly in the middle, wagging his tail. The guy sighs and says, "Buddy, why do you do this?" The dog just tilts his head, as if to say, "Because I’m the artist, and chaos is my canvas." The guy can’t stay mad—he grabs a broom, laughing, and starts planning revenge by hiding the dog’s favorite toy.

I’ve read terrifying accounts of sleep paralysis and the attendant feelings of oppression and supernatural presence they elicit. Thankfully, I’ve never experienced it. What I have experienced, on the other hand, is waking up in the dark and —for a short while— having zero recollection of where I am. The bed is unfamiliar, the room is strange, my muscle memory is helpless at locating the light switch, etc. The feeling of disorientation and vulnerability is unsettling. Though that’s just coming from traveling all the time and staying at so many hotels that they just become a forgettable blur at some point
