The most stable objects in the universe - neutron stars, white dwarfs and black holes - will disappear sooner or later. This is the conclusion reached by the authors of a new study showing that these superdense bodies evaporate under the influence of quantum effects arising in curved space-time, even in the absence of an event horizon, which was previously considered a necessary condition for Hawking radiation.
