Astronomers at the European Space Agency have published a new image obtained by the James Webb Orbiting Telescope (JWST).Β It shows a rare phenomenon known as the Einstein ring.

Einstein rings occur when light from a very distant object is bent (or lensed) around a closer massive object acting as a lens. This gravitational lensing effect is a clear illustration of what Albert Einstein calculated: the curvature of the invisible fabric of spacetime by any particle with mass. The more mass gathered in one place, the more it "twists" this fabric.

This is exactly what you can see in the image above. What at first glance appears to be one oddly shaped galaxy is actually two galaxies separated by a large distance.
