“Well, Doctor, what have we got, a republic or a monarchy?” Asked Elizabeth Powel at the Constitutional Convention in 1787. Franklin replied “A republic, if you can keep it.” Recorded by Maryland delegate James McHenry in his journal. I would love to see this journal one day. It’s currently in the manuscript division of the Library of Congress. Happy Independence Day.
