the internal contradictions of the cozyweb are too strong. we've had years of people selling us different kinds of revolutions, hyping up ideas from "connection" to "sensemaking", before they reject anyone genuinely transgressive. everyone selling new culture tries to set themselves up as the gatekeeper and distributor. "every media company is a bank" [1], and "every post feels like an ad" [2]. every critique of the current system is paired with an emotional appear to sell you something. the original lore gets lost [3]; actually caring becomes uncool while everyone tries to climb their local social ladder. niche subcultures begin to regard each other with suspicion. we don't know how to create genuine novelty faster than terms like "genuine novelty" can be appropriated. only banks and exchanges are left standing after the dust settles.
