note that "beating" your opponent is not the point of the game, which is to accumulate the most points *across* multiple matches

the optimal strategy to beat a single opponent is to always defect, but that is definitely not the optimal strategy across matches

Yea pretty much.

What might mess that up is that each match is fixed at a known number of rounds (10), so there is maybe some potential for backwards induction dynamics to mess things up. If I know that the next round is the last round, I should defect to maximize my points. But if know that my fellow prisoner is going to do that, then I should defect also. And if they know I'm going to defect in round 10, then when should they cooperate in round 9? And so on.
