$DEITY originates from early Unix and hacker culture as a tongue-in-cheek placeholder for any god or supreme being, used in expressions like “thank $DEITY” or “only $DEITY knows.” It follows the shell variable naming convention ($VARIABLE) to mock both religious invocations and programming syntax simultaneously. It gained popularity via communities like Usenet, IRC, and writings in the Jargon File (a.k.a. Hacker’s Dictionary). The use implies irony, agnosticism, or irreverence, consistent with the subversive, playful ethos of hacker communities.
