Is there any compelling reason to have home automation/security running outside of a local network? https://9to5google.com/2024/02/19/wyze-camera-thumbnails-breach/

Outside of convenience and simplicity for most usersโ€ฆ not really. But be prepared to pay and have your data stored/owned by someone else. Itโ€™s a trust trade off.

The only reason I can think of is cameras. If it is all local, worst case is an intruder takes your storage rig and now you lost the reason why you installed cameras. That being said, the best setup imo is local storage and control, offsite backup.

Ease of use, I guess. Iโ€™m using Ring for cloud recording storage and access via app from anywhere. Super convenient, which is obviously a privacy&security tradeoff compared to local LAN-based solutions.
