Just visited the Wayne Thiebaud exhibit at SFMoMA and was struck by his 1957 painting Electric Chair, a bold, black tangle against a red backdrop. Inspired by Franz Kline’s The Bridge, Thiebaud reimagines abstraction into something deeply personal. Thiebaud’s body of work was a good reminder that borrowing from predecessors isn’t always theft; it’s a new narrative when you imprint your own voice.
