Just visited the Wayne Thiebaud exhibit at SFMoMA and was struck by his 1957 painting Electric Chair, a bold, black tangle against a red backdrop. Inspired by Franz Kline’s The Bridge, Thiebaud reimagines abstraction into something deeply personal. 

Thiebaud’s body of work was a good reminder that borrowing from predecessors isn’t always theft; it’s a new narrative when you imprint your own voice.

I mostly know him for that 👇so this is quite a departure (or an origin story, I guess)

Yes! And this theme/style was mostly my experience of his work as well. But I was very impressed by the story behind his work (it is like an art history lesson) as well as the curation of the show. Apparently he considered himself a master thief and a large part of his repertoire is directly influenced by the masters. It’s just that the distinction is very dramatic and leaves little trace of original. Take these two works for instance 🙂
