In November 2022, my laptop was hacked and the attacker drained my browser extension wallets. I lost ~$10K worth of crypto and NFTs 😱 I was devastated and couldn’t figure right away out how my laptop was compromised Then, the attacker showed up 👀 But first, let me tell you how everything happened. A few days earlier, I received a DM on X. A stranger offered me to test his app and pay me to find bugs. He sent me a link. The website looked legit. I downloaded the app on my laptop and tried to install it but nothing happened. I sent a message to this person on X and told him his app isn’t starting. He sent me another link to download another version. I did but the result was the same - the app didn’t start. I became suspicious, removed the files from the laptop and never messaged this stranger again It turned out this anonymous person from X was the attacker and what I tried to install on my laptop was a trojan horse that ran in the background without me noticing anything for days 💀

Soon after the attacker stole all my crypto and NFTs, he published a post on my X account with a link to his app. When I saw it, I immediately understood what happened and deleted the post I panicked because I realized my laptop was compromised 🤯 I disconnected it from the Internet and started changing the passwords to all my most important accounts (emails, social media profiles, banking, etc.) using my mobile phone. The attackers tried access my Gmail but I had 2FA enabled on the phone and he wasn’t able to get in The hacker was unsuccessful in compromising anything else. But he stole all the money I had in crypto at the time 😭 $10,000 gone 😵 Here’s what to do and be safe in crypto: 1️⃣ NEVER click on ANY links you receive from people you don’t know 2️⃣ DO NOT talk to strangers in your DMs on X, Discord, Telegram and even Farcaster 3️⃣ KEEP ALL of your crypto on a hardware wallet like Trezor or Ledger If you follow these rules, you have lesser chances to be hacked 💯
