Happy surrealist saturday x artist discovery! Suzanne Duchamp’s work is not fully Surrealist in the canonical sense but it is closely adjacent to Surrealism and deeply rooted in Dada, from which Surrealism emerged 🌶️ Suzanne Duchamp was very much overshadowed by her brother, Marcel Duchamp, and this has played a significant role in how her work was received and remembered. My mum recently brought her work up after seeing it at an exhibition which led me down this rabbit hole! Her art predates and overlaps with early Surrealism, and it shares key Surrealist concerns (like ambiguity, symbolic association, and inner states) without fully embracing Surrealism’s later focus on automatism, dream imagery, or Freudian psychoanalysis. What i find most intriguing: Duchamp’s contribution to the broader art world lies in laying intellectual and poetic groundwork that Surrealism would later build upon. This made her work Surrealist in spirit, but fundamentally Dadaist in method!
