A New Kind of School for a New Kind of Crisis What if instead of another degree program with a fancy acronym, we built something different? Not a school in the traditional sense, but a protocol-native training initiative—adjacent to universities but unbound by their bureaucratic inertia. A place where learning happens by doing. Where simulations aren’t classroom exercises but full-scale rehearsals for reality. Imagine a wildfire crawling over Eaton Canyon. You’re not just reading about it in case studies. You’re responding to it in real time—running coordination protocols, navigating permitting pathways, deploying citizen UX flows that get information and aid where it needs to go. The fire is real in its simulation. The learning is real in its consequence. This isn’t fantasy. It’s rooted in precedent. A century ago, the Bureau of Municipal Research pioneered pragmatic reform from New York to Toronto. Their successors are out there now—latent, perhaps—but ready.

Today, we have the tools and insights to go further. We can prototype new permitting protocols, not just talk about reform. We can streamline government ops, not just consult on them. We can train a generation of public stewards not with lectures, but with playbooks forged in real-world cycles of iteration and adaptation. Let the MBAs chase optimization. Let the MPPs draft white papers. We can build a new path—not against universities, but alongside them—like a mycelial network, weaving through the undergrowth, metabolizing the dead wood of status games and blooming into fruit when the time is right. The work isn’t glamorous. But it is urgent. And deeply, wildly alive.
