I knew that the fork was introduced to Western Europe by a Byzantine princess who married the son of the Doge of Venice. I was not aware that it cause a major scandal among the clergy, described as an "excessive delicacy" and a "hateful vanity”. Apparently when she died of the plague, it was divine punishment for rejecting her God-given phalanges.
