I'm having fun as a little book sommelier for @coconutrinds. Felt like a shame not to share more widely. ~ Based on your writing style, life stage, and three chosen adjectives, I recommend the following books in this exact order. 1. A Different Person - James Merrill Coming of age memoir of by James Merrill, the son of a founding partner of Merrill Lynch who later won the Pulitzer Prize for poetry. 2. Status Anxiety - Alain de Botton Explores the fear of being perceived as worthless in the eyes of others and how sense of self worth has evolved in society. 3. Letters from Max - Sarah Ruhl Sarah Ruhl's one of my favorite modern playwrights. This is a collection of letters between her and a student, Max, who was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Different books that occupy the same universe in my mind. (1) starts with the lone voice of a young poet trying to escape a status-obsessed society, (2) zooms out to examine that society philosophically from 10,000 feet above, (3) explodes your heart/mind as two poets confront death - and what matters most - in raw and private dialogue.
