The egregious cost of gas on Robinhood is a non-starter for micro-transaction apps. It is not a chain that is conducive to building apps that move small amounts around. I'm seeing 25x or higher than the cost of gas on Base. Today I paid $0.25 in gas to mint NFTs, equivalent transactions (in gas used) on base cost $0.005.
I don't pretend to understand how any of this works, but I think Robinhood is processing L2->L1 transactions using blobs to make the fee cheap, but instead of passing the savings on to the consumer they are charging full rate and pocketing the difference.
If you are moving around 6 or 7 figure amounts in a single transaction, its noise. If you are transferring less than $1, its a huge slice.
Its been educational and definitely worthwhile to dig into Robinhood for our new app but I'm not sure its economically viable there. Sad.
