Lukomorye - not a fairytale land? The prologue to "Ruslan and Lyudmila" mentions the word Lukomorye. Interestingly, this name was mentioned on Western European maps of the 16th-18th centuries. It denoted the territory adjacent to the eastern shore of the Ob Bay next to Obdora. Lukomorye is also mentioned in ancient Russian chronicles. This name was given to a place in the lower reaches of the Dnieper, where the Polovtsians lived, and the Polovtsians were called Lukomorye. Lukomorye was also the name of the territory to which the Golden Horde army had to retreat after its defeat in the Battle of Kulikovo.
