Rest in peace, legend "José "Pepe" Mujica was a notable figure in Uruguayan politics, serving as the 40th President of Uruguay from 2010 to 2015. Born on May 20, 1935, in Montevideo, Mujica was a former guerrilla with the Tupamaros, a Marxist revolutionary group. He was tortured and imprisoned for 14 years during the military dictatorship in the 1970s and 1980s. Mujica's presidency was marked by his humble lifestyle and progressive reforms. He refused to live in the presidential palace, opting instead to commute from his modest home, a small farm on the outskirts of Montevideo. He also donated a significant portion of his presidential salary to charity, earning him the nickname "the world's poorest president." During his term, Mujica implemented several progressive policies, including the legalization of marijuana, same-sex marriage, and abortion. He also focused on environmental issues and sustainable development. (1/2, source: Venice)

"His administration was praised for improving social stability and economic health in Uruguay. Mujica's charismatic and down-to-earth personality made him a popular figure both within Uruguay and internationally. He was known for his straightforward speech and his criticism of consumerism and capitalism's excesses. His simple lifestyle and commitment to his principles earned him admiration and respect from many. After leaving office, Mujica continued to be an influential figure in Uruguayan politics. He served as a senator from 2015 until 2020, when he resigned due to health issues and the COVID-19 pandemic. He was 85 years old at the time of his resignation. Mujica passed away on May 13, 2025, at the age of 89, leaving behind a legacy of progressive reform and a commitment to social justice. He was survived by his wife, Lucía Topolansky, who was also a prominent politician and former guerrilla."
