Head lice (Pediculus humanus capitis) are tiny, wingless parasitic insects that live on the human scalp and feed on blood. They are evolutionarily designed to do one thing: hold onto human hair.
The Nit (Egg): These are tiny, oval specks glued to the hair shaft near the scalp. They are often yellow or white. Unlike dandruff, you cannot flick them off; they are cemented on.
The Nymph: The baby louse that hatches from the nit. It looks like an adult but smaller
The Adult: Roughly the size of a sesame seed. They are tan/grey and move fast.
How to get them
TRUE
you can get them through direct head to head contact
POSSIBLE
Sharing hats, brushes, or pillows. Lice are weak crawlers when not on hair and dehydrate quickly off the scalp.
FALSE
-Pets do not spread them
-They do not prefer dirty hair
TREATMENT
Prescription: Treatments like Spinosad (Natroba) or topical Ivermectin (Sklice) are more powerful and effective against resistant lice.
