Checked out the Museum of Contemporary Art in LA today.
- Hannah’s Wilkes piece reminded me of @alyssastevens 1990, watercolor on paper. The fact that it’s a self-portrait with a dual stroke caught my attention especially with the two pieces displayed side by side.
- “The Imprint of Drawing, Left Thumb” by Giuseppe Penone was my favorite. The photo doesn’t do it justice, the fine lines spiraling from the center of the thumb form one of the most exquisite expressions of grounding I’ve ever experienced. I could stare at this piece for hours and not get enough.
The curation was well done, especially the lead-up to the main room, where color and a tropical environment ignited dynamism through sculpture and some digital forms.
However, I was underwhelmed by the treatment of their employees. Management kept them in fixed positions, unable to move even when no visitors were around, and even interrupted a conversation I was having with one of the leads.
In art just like in technology you can have the most iconic pieces or the best products, but without empowered people, the magic never comes alive. ✨
