oohh do you have a fun callsign? Some day I'd like to get into HAM. My uncle was a trucker and had soooo many radio rigs

KE8ZNV is my call sign, I still need to test for my general, but I’ll likely not change my call sign when I do. But I would love to have a W8 call sign Testing is very easy and fun. At least for the technician (where I’m at right now, step 1) — HamStudy is a paid app that’s worth the money when it comes to preparing for the test. There is some overlap with truckers, but you’ll likely not find much of their radios and equipment here.

Ohh of course, CB vs HAM, I wasn't even thinking of that! I may start looking into that, I think it would be fun to tinker with. How do you use it (or plan to use it)? Just like, talk with strangers out in the world?

Mostly what I do is listen to other people talk about how they use it. I don’t have my general and some things I wanna do, like digital, you’ve gotta have your general license (which I’m slowly studying for) On sundays I join or listen to my club’s radio net. We call in and talk about a specific topic. Usually it’s something radio specific or sports and gardening. Other days of the week I leave my radio on and listen to the world wide friendship net— I’ve never called into that net because I listen to it through a repeater and I’m not really sure where to call in. I enjoy listening anyways it’s extremely busy with calls. But what I want to get into is mesh tastic, and something called cyber pony express that my friend is building out in California — I also am really interested in Fox hunting, which is a game where you can hide a few signals and then use some yagi like antennas to go on a hunt to go find them. Sorry if that was too much info 😬

That's awesome, and sounds like a lot of fun!! I have just recently learned about Meshtastic too, I would love to get a little neighborhood network going. From ebay I picked up some LoRa devices (CircuitMess Chatter) that I have working but I haven't tested them out for distance around trees and houses and such. I do need to look into the GMRS test and see about that (is that the same thing as "digital"?) - might work better for neighborhood or special event radios than just FRS walkie talkies.

i NEVER saw this... i was just scrolling back through notifications on whim and I am AGHAST! are you in a radio club? I am fairly active in mine and I would love to ask them about gmrs -- i had to google it tbh. Looks like you just pay a fee and you get the license and I dont see a test. https://www.fcc.gov/wireless/bureau-divisions/mobility-division/general-mobile-radio-service-gmrs from my skimming on that site I would guess that would be great for an event yeah! our club provides emergency communications and assists with the local parade line up for our in town festival along with an giant yearly airshow here in dayton. so if not everyone was a ham, they would likely do something like gmrs. and no, digital is the way you interface with radio, so like dmr and you can read it on your computer in a different mode basically. A lot of guys at the club do digital because their hearing is shot, but they can read just fine.

Ohh no worries, thanks for coming back to this! That's exciting about the license, only $35, and lasts ten years? Heck, I should just get one! I should look for a local radio club, too... I'm a bit of an introvert IRL but I could get over it if there's cool tech involved. Thank you!!

I am interested to ask around and see if any of my friends have some examples of how they have seen it used. Ill let ya know if I find out! we have a LOT of introverts, some come in person and our club hosts the meetings via zoom as well. our dues are only 10 a year and I cant imagine other places being too much more, honestly.
