an attempt to explain meditation as plainly as possible: remember the last time you were so engrossed in watching a tv show, or movie, that you forgot you were looking at a screen and actually believed yourself to be in the world of that show or movie? then, at a certain moment, you snap back into the more "correct" reality of having looked at a screen the entire time. the result of contemplative practice is developing that "outer" perspective as the new default. by default, we get lost in our thoughts, emotions and sensations, and we perceive their content as ultimate reality - just like a good tv show or movie "sucks us in". by continuously paying attention to the structure of our thoughts and sensations, meditation can craft a new, permanent perspective of yourself observing yourself observing. the practical result is being able to experience less pleasant feelings, experiences, thoughts as just feelings, experiences and thoughts, instead of a more fundamental "reality", and thus quickly move past them
