we picked up a hitchhiker in the middle of the desert. Austin spent the last year walking coast to coast from Florida to California. the only thing he had on him was a bottle filled up with murky canal water (the only water source for dozens of miles). The guy used to be a flight attendant for American Airlines based out of Kentucky, and now he’s walking and hopping trains to tour the country. He’d survive each day on berries and various barely edible plants whilst slowly making his way across in 110 deg heat
we picked up Austin on the way to slab city , an anarchist creative outpost right by joshua tree park. spent a few hours together and shared some stories
I’ve never seen someone more grateful to enjoy a refrigerated sandwich, some fruit and clean water. It’s wild what the human mind and body can endure for adventure.
