I’ve been thinking recently about ways in which it might be sensible for a culture to socially legitimize suicide in certain cases It sounds barbaric from a western perspective but I think that’s a result of individualism / death aversion

This is a sensitive subject for sure but one that is worthwhile to have thoughtful public discourse around. Suicide is a tragic fact of life. The notion many hold that those who choose to take their own lives are somehow weak saddens me. People do it for myriad of reasons. Years ago I watched a documentary, Terry Pratchett: Choosing to Die. It tells the stories of a number of individuals with terminal illnesses who are contemplating physician-assisted suicide. This intimate portrait really opened my mind and heart to facing such a decision. It gave me an understanding for these peoples' experiences and perspectives, as well as a respect for their courage and compassion. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terry_Pratchett:_Choosing_to_Die https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dignitas_(non-profit_organisation)
