the reason latinum is valuable in star trek is because it can't be replicated.  fun fact about the actual headline. it's created in the LHC by shooting lead nuclei super fast and near each other which causes protons to come off so lead has 82 protons and gold has 79 so when 3 protons come off technically they call it gold but it's beyond unstable and it disintegrates almost instantly. it doesn't just make gold though it just sheds protons so if it sheds 1 it makes bismuth, 2 is thallium, 3 is gold etc.
