this is not cynical, it's just the nature of the space. 

do not trust. verify. and then still don't trust.

true but you still gotta trust people to some extent. trust that they'll be people and most are opportunistic without moral

after 11 tears i learned trust is a bug, not a feature

Us auditors have a saying. Trust, but verify. Absolutely applicable in crypto.
