Signull is smart, so no knock on him.

But the take that "not getting AI" is existential for Apple is wrong.

Consumers are not going to give up their iPhones, especially if 80% of the benefit for frontier models are all available via apps...on their iPhones.

The mythical unicorn "new AI device" won't work because 1) messaging 2) camera won't be good enough 3) manufacturing a consumer-grade piece of hardware with good battery life and build quality in 2025 is still extremely difficult.

Apple can do nothing on AI for the next couple years and then do a good enough job with power of defaults + privileged system access and be fine.

They’re running the same playbook they did for Maps and their internal ad creative unit. 

Have an internal team compete with the best to earn their place as default. 

Playing an embarrassing game of catch up but I wouldn’t presume this means they’ll never do AI.
