Gm! In this photograph, a solitary rock rises in the Atacama Desert between two celestial planes. On the left, the bright band of the Milky Way reveals the galactic plane—a “river” of stars and dust seen edge-on. On the right, a faint triangle of pale light marks the ecliptic plane: the zodiacal light, sunlight scattered by tiny interplanetary dust particles. The meeting of these two elements—the galactic plane and the plane of the Solar System—forms an angle of approximately 60°, geometrically exposing the structures that shine in our sky. It is in this angular space that the paths of comets and planets intersect, inviting the viewer to traverse both the heart of the galaxy and the orbits of Solar System bodies at once.
