In a milder version, similar happened in East Germany where the privatization meant that most of the productive companies and assets were seized by West German "oligarchs", leaving East Germans disenfranchised and surely not surprisingly they make up a large share of those leaning very right these day.
One "positive" side effect of the communist everyone should work ethic is that older East German women are less likely to end up in poverty than their West German counterparts nowadays, mostly because the latter barely had a career.
That's because our tax system sure encourages financial dependence in marriages.
