⨠My Review â¨
TW: Murder, sex parties, lust, assault, secrets, blackmail, betrayal, corruption.
This book is best read without trying to force everything into a neat, cohesive whole. It doesnât exactly warn you that itâs fragmented on purpose, so let me do that. It draws you in with one perspective long enough to make you think itâs the main focus, only to reveal that itâs just an entry point into the true heart of the story: the dark, chaotic underbelly of the city.
Aima seems there to anchor us in a kind of moral center before Emezi yanks us into a world of corruption, power plays, violence, and sex. The novel asks: what happens when those used to power find themselves powerless? Itâs raw and unflinching, showcasing Emeziâs talent for layered, flawed characters and morally messy worlds.
Itâs a tough, sometimes disorienting read, but intentionally so. Iâd rate it a 6/10.
