On the way home after watching fireworks, I looked up at the sky and saw a star that seemed to be moving. I thought it might just be my imagination, so I focused on the star, and sure enough, it was slowly moving from left to right. It wasn’t just moving—it felt more like it was traveling. I wondered if it might be a UFO. I was in elementary school at the time, and I told my grandma, who was walking with me, that the star was moving. She said something like, “That’s strange,” and seemed just as puzzled as I was. After that, we walked home talking about what we might play tomorrow. When we got home, I told my mom about the star. Deep down, I was hoping that the moving star was actually a UFO. But my mom said it was probably a satellite. She explained that satellites are far away, so they look small like stars and move slowly across the sky. I was disappointed that the possibility of it being a UFO had gone down. I really wanted to see a UFO.

初めて一蘭にいって味集中カウンターを体験したのは20歳を超えてからだった。先に体験した友達がすごいよと言っていたからそんなにすごいんかなと思いながら、その友達と食べに行った。 味集中カウンターはすごく良かったし、ラーメンそのものの味もすごく大好きな味だったこともあり僕はそれから何度も一蘭に足を運んだ。 替え玉を注文する時に流れるチャルメラの音がなんとも心地いい。自分以外のカウンターからあの音が流れるたびにラーメン屋感が高まり、自分も替え玉しようかなと感じさせられる。 替え玉を頼むと、茹でたて熱々の麺がシルバーの皿に盛られて届けられる。まだ残しておいたスープに入れ二週めのラーメンを楽しむ。替え玉というシステムを考案した人もすごいよねと改めて思いながら麺をすする。 ラーメンを食べ終え店外へ出る。次はいつ来ようかと思いながら商店街を歩いた。

でかくて安くて旨い でかくて安くて旨いものが最強だ。551の豚饅がそれである。でかくて安くて旨い。 空腹時に店の前を通ると必ず買ってしまう。お腹が減ってるもんだから必要個数よりも少し多めに買ってしまう。それでも余すことなく全部ぺろりと食べてしまう。 旨いのは豚饅だけではない。シュウマイも旨いし肉団子の甘酢あんもすごく旨い。餃子もあるし、アイスキャンデーも旨い。アイスキャンデーに関しては白熊のシンボルデザインもかわいい。 551はでかくて安くて旨い、つまり最強ということで間違いない。

なんでこんなことを覚えているんだろう 中学生の頃に通っていた学習塾、先生は少しコワモテのおじさん先生だった。だいたい10人くらいの僕たち相手に狭い部屋で勉強を教えてくれた。いわゆる個人塾だった。 授業と授業の合間の休憩時間になったら先生が外の自動販売機でジュースを買ってくれることがあった。基本的には自分で希望の飲み物を選んで買ってもらえたのだけど、ある時先生が勝手に選んで買ってきた。それを僕にくれた。 それは缶コーヒー（270ml）だった。中学生だったけど僕はそれまでその類のちゃんとした缶コーヒーを飲んだ経験がなかった。 すごく苦かった。それまで味わったことがない苦味が口に広がった。 なんでこんなことを覚えているんだろう。

家の近所のおもちゃ屋を全部まわったけど見つからなくて、どこにも売ってなかった。友達がハイパーヨーヨーを得意気に回してるのを見て指をくわえるしかなかった。 それにしてもあれの仕組みはどうなってるのか。僕はそればかりが気になっていた。ひもが伸び切ったあとヨーヨーの本体部分（丸い回るところ）がひもの先でぐるぐると回り続ける。なぜ従来のヨーヨーのように反動で戻っていかないのか。 その場でぐるぐると回り続けたあと、手首をクンとするだけでヨーヨーが反動で戻っていくようになるのか。わからないし、不思議だった。

There’s a type of ramen called Tenkake Ramen. It’s a specialty dish from a shop in Wakayama, topped with seaweed, bits of tempura batter, and pickled ginger. The pickled ginger, in particular, is amazing. Its presence adds just the right touch to the ramen. There are two kinds of pickled ginger—bright red and light pink—and the one on Tenkake Ramen is the light pink type. Not too bold, not too faint—that’s what light pink is to me. Not exactly a star, not just a side character either, but more like: “Hey, I’m here. I exist.” That’s the kind of color it is. And that light pink pickled ginger sitting on top of the Tenkake Ramen—it really makes the whole dish taste just like that.

天かけラーメンというラーメンがある。和歌山にあるお店の名物ラーメンで、わかめと天かすと紅生姜がのっているラーメンだ。 特に紅生姜が最高だ。紅生姜がそえられることによってラーメンにちょうどよいアクセントができる。 紅生姜には真っ赤色タイプと薄ピンク色タイプが存在するが、天かけラーメンにのっているのは薄ピンク色タイプだ。 強すぎず弱すぎず、それが薄ピンク色だと思う。主役でもなく脇役でもない、ただ俺はここにいるんだ私はここにいるのよといった色合い、それが薄ピンク色だ。 その薄ピンク色の紅生姜がのった天かけラーメンはまさにそういう味に仕上がっている。

I heard from a friend that your first kiss is supposed to taste like lemon. Really? I thought. That can’t be true. But since I’d never kissed anyone before, I couldn’t say for sure. If I ever did get the chance to kiss someone, I figured I’d be way too nervous to even notice what it tasted like. So what does a first kiss really taste like, I wonder?
