A friend of mine who knew a lot about computers introduced me to something called a Pocket Board. Back then, cell phones were just starting to become popular, and even if you had one (a flip phone, of course), sending a single email was a real struggle. The Pocket Board, which my friend helped me get, looked like a tiny computer—or maybe like a Nintendo DS. You could type emails on it while looking at the screen on the top, just like on a real PC. Later on, you could connect it to your mobile phone with a cable and actually send the emails. We’d send each other simple messages like “Hello, this is a test email” and have fun with it. Sending a message from one device and having it arrive on the other—that alone was exciting and made us happy.
