how long are we considered children? how long do parents keep protecting us, seeing us as small, caring for us like we’re still kids? today my dad called and asked when I’ll visit. i told him honestly - right now i just can’t afford to. he said he really hopes i can come this year, to see him and mom. that he has some savings set aside and who else would he spend it on, if not his kids? now i’m torn. part of me really wants to go. but another part feels so uncomfortable, like i should be the one helping them by now. i’m an adult… aren’t i? how long we will remain kids and how long we will take care as parents (when we became them)

We're always our parent's children - that never stops. As for finances - it's been my experience that once a child becomes a self sufficient adult - say mid 20's after schooling and in first proper job (later for professionals) - then money can flow both ways but mostly from the party that has more. Throughout my twenties and thirties my parents were always helping me through different stages of my career - most particularly with travel expenses to see them. Now money flows the other way but it is never expected or demanded. I bet on your death bed you'll never look back and regret spending time with your family :-)
