Funny, been thinking about this recently. Re: grappling specifically, I think it’s about near-deathness. Every session, round, exchange sharpens you in non-trivial ways and teaches you how to avoid pseudo-death the next time around. But, in the process, you HAVE to lose, get controlled, subbed etc. Obvs there’s a bunch of material benefits to the practice but I index on the profound aspect most, I think. https://www.ribbonfarm.com/2018/06/21/near-deathness/
