as my kids are now school age (>5), i'm noticing myself becoming more and more "asian dad" - other kids could commit full-on crimes, like arson or murder, and i'll just smile at them, wouldn't bat an eye... but my 8-year-old forgets her 9 times tables and suddenly i'm all

Yeah. We were never tiger parents committing so-called ‘educational abuse’ but we do live in Japan and non Japanese people consider that ‘Asia’ so I can relate. A little negative reinforcement/ dry threatening goes a long way though. I mean working at Family Mart full time for the rest of your life isn’t that bad, right. You could always go next door and see your current friends who work at Taiyo (supermarket). That exact speech motivated her to sign up for cram school on her own in 4th grade and crush the next 8 years (still going).

poor konbini employees out here catching strays 🤣 atm, i don't even mind that she doesn't have the basics down as i know it takes time to solidify. i just want her to admit if/when she doesn't understand so that then we can try to work up from that point!
