Odile Speed, later Odile Crick, married Francis Crick in 1949 in Cambridge. She worked as a teacher before their daughters were born. In 1953, Francis Crick and James Watson asked her to draw the double helix for their DNA paper in Nature. This sketch became iconic in molecular biology. Although initially unaware of its significance, she later acknowledged its importance. Aside from her scientific contributions, Crick also gained attention for her paintings of nudes, often using au pairs and secretaries as models. The Cricks were known for their lively parties in the 1960s.
