STEP 242 is an open standard that allows for the embedding of product and manufacturing information in 3D files. It’s being put behind an expensive paywall by the big 6 CAD companies. A serious drag on object design, eng, and manufacturing productivity. https://www.iso.org/standard/84667.html

Each CAD company is incentivized to push their proprietary file format to drive buy-in. The last 20 years of STEP have even made it possible to maintain the feature tree which would allow for additional parametric editing later in the object process. Overdue for a shakeup
