Lake Baikal, located in southern Siberia, is the oldest and deepest freshwater lake in the world. The lake is about 25 million years old and is over 1,600 meters deep. Baikal is also one of the clearest lakes in the world, and in winter its surface is covered with a thick layer of transparent ice. The lake is home to unique species of animals and plants, including the Baikal seal, the only freshwater seal species in the world.
